August 23, 2021, marked the 158th Chicago expressway shooting this year. Expressway shootings have skyrocketed in comparison to previous years; with 128 shootings reported in 2020 and only 52 in 2019. Of the 158 shootings in 2021, only 10 arrests have been made. Illinois State Police announced the installation of new specialized cameras on Chicago expressways as a tool to help detect and deter expressway shootings.
